Brent is an active Navy Reservist having transferred as a Commodore from permanent Navy after a successful and rewarding 37 year career. He is a Seaman Officer, specialist Mine Warfare and Clearance Diving Officer. He has held a number of Command positions at sea and ashore, has served with US, UK and NATO forces, and held senior positions in the Joint Defence environment. Brent has operational and active Service experience including the Tanker (Gulf) War, Solomon Islands, Afghanistan and Border Protection.

Brent continues to focus on giving back to the community. He has been a Menslink Mentor to a young guy, is actively volunteering with the South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron and Operation Flinders (supporting young people in outback intervention programs), and is a certified IECL organisational coach. A particular focus area is on programs that support ex Service personnel.

Brent enjoys maintaining a high level of personal fitness with an interest in kayaking, rock climbing, and mountain biking, and particularly enjoys riding his Indian Scout motorcycle.
